What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the correction of crowding of the upper and lower jaws and teeth.
Since it is more difficult to clean crooked and poorly positioned teeth, there is a risk of developing periodontal (gum) diseases and early loss of teeth due to tooth decay. They can also cause more pressure on the jaw muscles, leading to temporomandibular joint disorders and thus headaches, back and shoulder pain.
Crooked teeth also affect your appearance. With orthodontic treatment, you can have a healthier mouth, a more impressive appearance and teeth that will stay in your mouth longer. The dentist working in this branch is called an orthodontist. In order to become an orthodontist, it is necessary to receive specialty training after graduating from the faculty of dentistry.
Why Orthodontics?
It is more difficult to maintain oral hygiene with crooked teeth and therefore gum disease and caries occur more easily. In case of crowding and impaired joint relationship, chewing cannot be done completely and some problems start in the digestive system. In cases where the upper and lower teeth are not fully compatible with each other, the jaw joint or a single tooth may be overloaded, leading to painful and difficult to treat problems. Aesthetically, incredible changes can be created, especially in some cases.
Duration of Orthodontic Treatment
Although the duration of orthodontic treatment depends on the severity of the anomaly, orthodontic treatment is long and each phase varies. Some malocclusions can be treated in a single phase, while others require two or three phases. Good results depend on a good teamwork between the patient, his/her family and the orthodontist.
